The history of punk fashion
The history of punk fashion starts around the 1970’s. Punk music was the voice of discontented kids, a whole lot of anger, rebellion, and outrageous despair. This type of vial music hit a cord with a large group of kids and young adults and thus Punk got a name. To match the dress with the vulgar music, punk fashion was then formed; ripped jeans plaid pants and shirts, ripped t-shirts with crude sayings spread across the t-shirts and leather jackets, studded wrist bands, wallet chains, spiked Mohawks or gelled spikes throughout the hair and even a long strip of hair down the back. Want red, blue, yellow or pink hair? That was the norm for the punk lover. The look was for the shock factor and they achieved it quite well.
You would have thought during this time that this type of punk dressing would only be worn by those who mingled amongst themselves and kept in private. The reality is totally the opposite. Those who dressed in punk fashion wore it proudly and out in public for everyone to see. They wore it at school, in the park, and concerts and more importantly at home. Their message was loud and clear, anger and wild rebellion ruled. Punk is still alive and well today by all of those who felt the connection with it then and all of those who feel it now.
As the 1980’s came about T-shirts with vial sayings, a leather jacket, blue jeans or spandex leggings, leather Doc Martin style lace up boots, lace skirts were all pretty typical. Lots of thick chains hung from torn jeans. All of this completed the look.
The Ramones, Sex Pistols and even the Scorpions were the bands of choice and you could get and can still get a t-shirt with one of these punk rock bands across the front and back. Yes, for anyone who thought punk was a fad, think again it is still very much alive. |
